Assessing the Effectiveness of Oxidation Inhibitors for Electrical Connection between Aluminum Conductors

Abstract

High transitional resistance at the joint between conductors may cause power losses and contribute to increased fire hazard on power facilities. This especially concerns aluminum conductors, because the interaction between aluminum and atmospheric oxygen gives rise to stubborn dielectric surface oxide film that considerably increases the transitional resistance. Use of oxidation inhibitors that can substantially reduce the contact resistance is one way to deal with this issue. Here, oxidation inhibitors produced in different countries are compared. The effectiveness of inhibitors is also studied at lower and elevated temperatures. Due to their relatively high effectiveness, the inhibitors can be recommended as a means to reduce the transitional resistance.
