The effect of graphite on the corrosion of Hastelloy N in molten fluorides

The effect of graphite powders (0.02 wt.% and 0.1 wt.%) and the interaction between graphite bulk and Hastelloy N in molten 46.5%LiF-11.5%NaF-42%KF (mol%) (FLiNaK) at 700 °C in Ar atmosphere on the corrosion behavior of Hastelloy N is studied. The corrosion of Hastelloy N is accelerated in both cases, which mainly manifested as the selective dissolution of Cr and Mo. The dissolved Cr and Mo ions can diffuse toward the graphite to be reduced partly to metals, especially through disproportionation reactions.
