Electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles are the gateway to the future of transportation. The policymakers all around the world are pushing for a transition to electric and hybrid vehicles as soon as possible because of its environment-friendly nature and also reducing dependency on the fossil fuels. But with the introduction of electric vehicles comes the challenge of developing the charging stations (CS). If the transition to smart electric vehicles has to happen, the need to develop smart charging stations becomes even more important. The location, nature and technology used in the charging station will affect the performance and ultimately decide the success of the electric and hybrid vehicles. This paper presents different constraints, optimization techniques and optimal location of the charging stations. This paper provides the comprehensive survey of outcomes obtained in the optimal placement of electric vehicle charging stations.
