"High tie" (HT) and "low tie" (LT) of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) are two strategies in colorectal cancer surgery. HT describes ligation of the root of the IMA resulting in a more extended lymphadenectomy due to apical lymph node dissection. Apical lymph node metastasis is associated with a poor prognosis [1]. LT describes ligation of the IMA distal to the left colic artery (LCA) preserving this branch’s blood supply to the anastomosis.
