Stock Size Assessment, Distribution and Biology of the Surf Clam Mactra stultorum (Mollusca: Bivalvia) Along the Sfax Coasts (Tunisia, Mediterranean Sea)

Mactra stultorum is one of the most abundant bivalve species along the Tunisian coast. Its current exploitation status represents a major concern for the fishing industry in Tunisia. This study investigates the stock distribution, population structure and some environmental parameters associated with M. stultorum. The obtained results reveal that this bivalve had significant density variation in the study area. The stock density ranged from 0 to 30 ind m−2, and biomass values varied from 0 to 206 g m−2. A remarkable biomass of 71.7 ± 23.5 tons and high abundance reaching 11.7 ± 3.9 million individuals was estimated in area of 4182 ha. The individuals ranged in size from 6 to 38.5 mm. The overall sex ratio (F:M) was 1:1.37, which significantly deviated from parity (1:1). It was noticed that several abiotic parameters (seawater temperature and salinity as well as sediment type and organic matter content) affected considerably the spread of the clam species. If managed properly, the clam is expected to meet the domestic market demand through artisanal fishery.
