The imperfect denitrifier Ca. D. denitrificans inhabiting anammox bioreactors can use a range of electron donors for denitrification, including aromatic compounds, glucose, sulfur compounds, and hydrogen. However, our metatranscriptomic analysis suggested that the major electron donors are aromatic compounds, which inhibit anammox activity.
