It is not a part of the Internet where many of us spend a lot of time, but venture into certain dark corners of the online world and the subject matter quickly veers into tabloid territory and beyond. Dare to look on 4chan, Parler, extremist Twitter, and other sites, and you might be in for a shock. If you are one of many biological science researchers who uploaded a paper to a preprint server, such as arXiv or bioRxiv in the last several years, you could see your publication linked to as “evidence” on one of these sites to advance a conspiracy theory or disinformation campaign.
