Recent studies provide evidence for an intimate relationship between exposure to airborne pollutants and the onset of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Improving air quality to alleviate the burden associated with CVD is therefore of vital importance. In 2020 there were two major events that had opposing effects on airborne pollutants. On the one hand, the massive bushfires in Australia had a negative impact on air pollution levels. On the other hand lockdown measures related to the Covid pandemic helped to improve air quality. In article 2100046, Kathryn Wolhuter and colleagues discuss these two events in more detail and how they can teach us what needs to be done going forward.
