An investigation on the rise time characteristics of particles in extensive air showers

Based on the CORSIKA simulations of inclined extensive air sowers with proton and iron as primary particles, we have calculated the rise time (t1/2) of detected pulses in particle detectors. We performed the simulations for six different zenith angles between 20° and 53°. It is shown that the rise time has a strong dependence on the core location, zenith, and azimuth angle of a primary particle. Moreover, azimuthal asymmetries of the rise time, which is a characteristic of inclined extensive air showers, are investigated. The potential use of this parameter for mass discrimination of cosmic rays is also discussed.
