This paper proposes active Islanding Detection (ID) method based on Gaussian Modulated Signal (GMS) injection. The small-signals are added to the inverter’s modulation indexes in order to cause voltage disturbances at Point of Common Coupling (PCC), where the Rate of Change of Frequency (ROCOF) is monitored. This plug-in approach can be easily incorporated into the converter’s control law, and does not degrade the power quality. To show the effectiveness of the method, it is tested under several power mismatch scenarios, as well as under asymmetrical faults to prove the technique’s robustness against false trips. In addition, a comparison with the standard (ROCOF) relay is performed and the power quality indexes evaluated.
