Restricted environment frees up reaction: Chitosan fibers with covalently linked RuII polypyridine complexes and encapsulated IrO2 nanoparticles exhibit a remarkable quantum yield of 0.21 for photoinduced water oxidation in sacrificial schemes. The restricted environment is held responsible for accelerating electron transfer steps, which are considered to be the basis of the efficiency of the overall photocatalytic process.
