Rajat Gupta earned his MS in Biotechnology from the University of Central Florida in the laboratory of Dr Sampath Parthasarathy, where he studied the effects of the breakdown products of fatty acid peroxides on the induction of apolipoprotein A1. The desire to learn more about complex gene-environment interactions in cardiometabolic diseases brought him to University of California Los Angeles, where he is currently pursuing his PhD in the Molecular Toxicology interdepartmental program (mentor, Dr Jesus Araujo). His interest lies in studying the role of oxidative stress in vascular diseases and the mechanisms of how air pollutants (such as ultrafine particles and diesel exhaust emissions) promote atherosclerosis. His research also focuses on studying the cardiovascular health effects of electronic cigarette use in young adults. In the future, he aspires to work as an independent scientist in a leading Biotechnology industry. Outside of work, he enjoys yoga-meditation, swimming, tennis and spending quality time with friends and family. He is always keen on participating in water sports and exploring beach towns.

Dr Maria Bartosova earned a MS in Biotechnology from Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovakia and her PhD from Heidelberg University, Germany, within the Marie Curie-funded network European Training and Research in Peritoneal Dialysis (EuTRiPD). Currently she is working as DFG-funded postdoctoral fellow at Heidelberg University Hospital in Dr Claus Schmitt’s lab. She is organizing the International Peritoneal Biobank and focused on peritoneal and cardiovascular health of (pediatric) patients with chronic kidney disease, on peritoneal dialysis and after transplantation. Her most recent work reveals the glucose derivative induced molecular pathomechanisms of vascular disease in children on peritoneal dialysis.

Dr Martin Schlegel is an anesthesiologist and scientist at the Technical University Munich. During his doctoral training with Prof. Mirakaj at the University of Tuebingen, Dr Schlegel became interested in the role of neuronal guidance proteins in acute inflammation. With a DFG funded scholarship he pursued his postdoctoral training with Dr Kathryn Moore at NYU, focusing on the mechanisms of chronic inflammation and how murine neuronal guidance proteins alter the resolution of inflammation and plaque regression in atherosclerosis. After his return to Germany Dr Schlegel started his own lab at the Technical University Munich. His lab focuses on the translation of basic research on inflammation to clinic trials on ICU.

When he is not in the clinic or lab, Dr Schlegel enjoys spending time with his wife and kids and loves to travel and discover gins. Dr Schlegel can be found on Twitter @PMSchlegel.

Dr Jiabing Rong earned his BS and PhD from Zhejiang University and now is a clinician in the Department of Cardiology, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine. He will continue postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Dr Jian’an Wang over the next three years. He focuses on investigating novel functions and mechanisms of renin-angiotensin system in cardiovascular diseases. In the future, he aims to be more involved in translational research on cardiovascular diseases.

Dr Ryan Hoiland is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver General Hospital, in Vancouver, Canada. He completed his Bachelor of Human Kinetics followed by his Master of Science and PhD in Health and Exercise Sciences at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. Ryan began his graduate studies with a keen interest in high-altitude adaptation and physiologic responses to hypoxia in humans. Since the completion of his PhD, his postdoctoral research has focused on the pathophysiology of central nervous system hypoxia in the setting of cardiac arrest and spinal cord injury.

Dr Mypinder Sekhon completed his medical school, internal medicine residency and critical care medicine fellowship at the University of British Columbia. Subsequently, he completed a neurocritical care fellowship at the University of Cambridge and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia and a staff intensivist at Vancouver General Hospital. He completed his PhD in cerebrovascular sciences and his research program focuses on delineating the pathophysiology of hypoxic ischemic brain injury following cardiac arrest using a combined translational approach of multimodal neuromonitoring and cellular/molecular based analytics.
