Contribution to the knowledge of the genetic diversity and taxonomy of some Iranian Trifolium species

Trifolium (Fabaceae) is widely distributed with more than 255 species. The current study contributed to the knowledge of the diversity and genetic population structure of eight Iranian Trifolium, which remained relatively obscure. The taxonomic circumscription of sections and varieties is still questionable and poorly understood. The current study contributed to the genetic diversity, and population genetics of eight Iranian Trifolium specimens belonging to sections Mistyllus and Vesicaria based on IRAP and SSR datasets. A considerable level of polymorphism was detected among specimens. Molecular variance analysis exhibited much more genetic variation within populations in IRAP genetic marker, while an equal level of variation was detected within and among populations in SSR. IRAP and SSR genetic markers exhibited significant tree incongruence mainly due to the existence of a different genomic constitution. Furthermore, the results confirmed that the Vesicaria and Mistyllus sections are completely separate.
