Substitution of cyanines with different terminal indolium groups and distinct polymethine chain directs the excited state either to deactivation by internal conversion (IC) or photochemistry resulting in the generation of initiating radicals for free-radical polymerization and conjugate acid for cationic polymerization and self-polyaddition of vinyl ether M1.
