Microfluidics and fluorescence microscopy revealed that safranine O binds to clathrate hydrates surfaces and inhibits their growth. Cryo-TEM imagery exhibited the formation of lamella films in safranine solutions. A molecular model of safranine films suggests structural similarities to antifreeze proteins that also bind to ice and hydrates.
