In this issue of Chem Catalysis, Kempe and co-workers disclose a general and efficient catalytic synthesis of 1,3-diketones via dehydrogenative rearrangement of esters. The reported process provides an attractive alternative to conventional crossed Claisen condensation, avoiding the generation of alcohol by-products.
