An innovative method, namely the current integration method or $Q(t)$ method, for evaluating the electrical insulating properties of insulating material was introduced in the “News from Japan” column of the July-August 2021 issue of the IEEE Electrical Insulation Magazine [1]. In this issue, several examples of the application of the $Q(t)$ method to industrially important phenomena such as the effects of gamma-ray irradiation and the appearance of water trees in cables are introduced. In addition, examples of its application to actual devices such as power electronic devices (IGBTs, insulated-gate bipolar transistors) and stranded insulated wires are mentioned.
