Abstract

As we become more and more comfortable in our positions as leaders and managers, we create expanding domains of expertise. The creation of these knowledge bases is a productive yet stressful process that results in a sense of comfort and stability in our positions. These benefits grow out of a sense of confidence that we have achieved a number of important milestones. Yet with stability comes the risk that we may slip into stasis. New leaders can be aware of related risks as they build their own sense of achievement while established leaders can take stock and see where they can improve their own listening skills, which are often the first to slip as we enjoy the perks of experience. Deep listening is reviewed as a growth habit that can help to sharpen our leadership skills.
