Manganese-catalyzed ammonia oxidation under chemical or electrochemical conditions is investigated in this work. Mechanistic studies including density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that a nucleophilic attack of ammonia on manganese imide complexes occurs to form a nitrogen–nitrogen bond leading to dinitrogen.
