One of the main drawbacks of conventional incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) is the questionable eligibility of a selected record suite as an appropriate representative of different intensity levels according to probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. The present study proposes an alternative approach to select a suitable set of ground motions at each intensity level by considering the vector of intensity measures (IMs) correlated with an engineering demand parameter (EDP) and the associated weight vectors. Piecewise incremental dynamic analysis (PIDA) is performed using hazard-consistent record suites for the seismic assessment of structures. The PIDA results can present a more reliable prediction of the seismic performance of buildings due to the higher accuracy of this method in selecting ground motions compared to the adaptive incremental dynamic analysis (AIDA), the hazard-consistent IDA, and the conventional IDA conducted by two common record selection methods, particularly for greater values of damage states.
