Novel nanotube/poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid)/epoxy composite adhesive possessing in-situ electrical-heating activated crack healing function

Carbon nanotube (CNT) and poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) (EMAA) are used to modify a general epoxy to prepare an adhesive possessing in-situ electrical-heating activated (EHA) crack healing function. EMAA films with ordered holes are prepared and sprayed with various area densities of amino-functionalized CNT to form electro-thermal healing films. Then, EMAA/CNT films are infiltrated with epoxy to prepare EMAA/CNT/epoxy adhesive. Results reveal that the temperature of the adhesive would quickly increase to 150 °C within 2 min with a CNT density of 14 g/m2. Also, macro-crack within the adhesive could be in-situ healed completely within 45 min and ultimate strength of the adhesive can be healed by 45.7–52.6% by the EHA method. Moreover, when the adhesive is used to bond a T-joint, the initial damage and ultimate peeling force can be respectively restored to 107% and 71–93%. Namely, the adhesive shows a high healable ability to the crack of a structure.
