La Vagabonde (1910) is the first novel that Colette (1873–1954) wrote in her own name after her divorce from Willy.1 The novel is a milestone in Colette’s oeuvre because it marks her first attempt to stand in her own right and on her own terms. Here, for the first time, we see her as Colette the artist-writer, and not as a mere helpmeet to Willy. The plot of La Vagabonde corresponds nicely with the details of Colette’s actual biography. The novel focuses on a music-hall dancer and a writer named Renée who has recently divorced her adulterous husband, Adolphe Taillandy. Having rid herself of this serial cheater, Renée is free to embark on a journey of self-discovery. As we shall see, it is a trek fraught with anxieties, solitude and ambivalences.
