High wear-resisting,superhydrophobic coating with well aging resistance and ultrahigh corrosion resistant on high vinyl polybutadiene rubber substrate by thiol-ene click chemistry

Due to its excellent anti-water property, superhydrophobic surfaces possess great potential applications in industrial and daily life. However, the durability makes a severe obstacle to their widely used. In this research, we developed a superhydrophobic rubber surface coatings (SHRSCs) with high abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance by embedding silanized silicon dioxide (SiO2) into the surface of high vinyl polybutadiene rubber (HVPB) matrix based on thiol-ene click chemistry. High-performance SHRSCs were prepared by generating substantial covalent bonds between the sulfhydryl groups of silanized SiO2 and the side vinyl groups of HVPB under UV light irradiation, as confirmed by swelling. Meanwhile, Scanning electron microscope (SEM)analysis further indicated that HVBR-cladding silanized SiO2 could form plenty of micro-nanostructures on the surface of HVBR matrix, and significantly reduce the surface energies (SEs). This strategy proposed here suggestes a simple and effective pathway toward high-performance SHRSCs, which promises to be applicatable for surface modification of marine rubber products such as ship bollards and submarine cables.
