This minireview presents recent examples of mechanically interlocked structures for biological and medical applications. Topics discussed include smart drugs, theranostics, sensing of medically relevant species, as well as protein- and DNA engineering. Utilizing the unique properties of the mechanical bond to construct functional systems for biomedical applications can serve as a paradigm for further developments in these fields.
