Cycles of death and rebirth in twenty-first century French horror

ABSTRACT

This introduction to the special issue on twenty-first century French horror cinema provides a historical overview of the past 20 years of horror film production in France. From the ‘Bee Movies’ label started in 2001 to the 2017 CNC call for genre film projects led by Julia Ducournau, the author discusses how French horror, despite a hostile industrial ecosystem, has managed to survive and, in some cases, even thrive internationally. Looking at the reasons for the difficulties, failures and rebirths of French horror ultimately yields unique insights into the inner workings of the French film industry at large.
