Abstract

Extensive geological and hydrobiogeochemical studies were conducted for the first time in two Sikhote-Alin (Primorskii krai) areas, where geophagy among wild ungulates has been massively manifested. The mineral and chemical compositions of rocks, the chemical composition of surface and spring waters and vegetation, and biological tissues of red deer (Cervus elaphus), harvested in the study areas, have been studied. It was concluded that geophagy of animals develops in the landscapes on volcanogenic rocks with high concentrations of mobile forms of rare earth elements. The consumption of vegetation with high concentrations of such elements can cause metabolic disorders in the body, accompanied by a stress response. Considering the published data on geophagy among animals in Africa, it is suggested that the main reason for the consumption of clay rocks is to regulate the concentration and ratio of rare-earth elements in the body by means of mineral sorbents, which may also be enriched in animal-available forms of sodium.
