This Virtual Issue includes selected articles published in ACS Pharmacology & Translational Science between 2018 and 2020 by European researchers from various countries, including the United Kingdom, Hungary, Denmark, Austria, France, Switzerland, Russia, Germany, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Belgium, and The Netherlands. Some of these articles were published in collaboration with groups located in various other countries, such as the United States, Australia, and Canada. The Virtual Issue highlights the wealth of research in this area, covering a broad range of topics including, for example, antibacterial, antiviral (also covering COVID-19) and insecticidal agents, anticancer therapeutics, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. It also presents progress on some of the most prominent drug targets, including a considerable number of articles on G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) including orphan GPCRs and the role of GPCR in cancer, allosteric modulation of GPCRs, and biased signaling. The Virtual Issue also introduces an important, large international network funded by the European Commission, the European Research Network on Signal Transduction (ERNEST). Moreover, it reports investigation on novel drug targets, e.g., RNA. Several articles describe the development of novel tools and test systems for target validation and for studying drug actions. Other articles discuss novel approaches, such as photopharmacology, and crucial insights into drug development, e.g., the significance of ligand–receptor binding kinetics.
