Optimal outrigger locations and damping parameters for single-outrigger systems considering earthquake and wind excitations

This paper investigates the optimal outrigger locations (OOLs) and optimal damping parameters (ODPs) for single-outrigger systems in high-rise buildings subject to earthquake and wind excitations. Three types of outrigger systems are considered: (1) the single-conventional/ordinary outrigger system (OR1); (2) the single viscous-damper outrigger system (OVD1); and (3) the single buckling-restrained-brace outrigger system (OBRB1). The paper proposes simplified models (SMs) for the top displacement, inter-story drift, and core base moment of single-outrigger systems subject to earthquake and wind excitations. The models are developed using a pseudo excitation method (PEM). The paper defines dimensionless parameters to characterize each of the three types of outrigger systems. Probabilistic models are developed to define the optimal outrigger locations as functions of such dimensionless parameters. Finally, additional probabilistic models are proposed to find the optimal damping parameters of OVD1 and OBRB1 as functions of the outrigger location, defined using the previously proposed models, and a dimensionless parameter capturing the relative stiffness of the system components.
