Flow cytometric evaluation of the neutrophil compartment in COVID-19 at hospital presentation: A normal response to an abnormal situation
Journal of Leukocyte Biology ( IF 5.5 ) Pub Date : 2021-07-28 , DOI: 10.1002/jlb.err0521-235

In the article “Flow cytometric evaluation of the neutrophil compartment in COVID-19 at hospital presentation: A normal response to an abnormal situation,” by Roy Spijkerman, Suzanne H. Bongers, Bas J. J. Bindels, et al., appearing in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, January 2021, 109(1):99-114; doi: 10.1002/JLB.5COVA0820-520RRR, an error occurred in the gating strategy of Figure 1 that erroneously identifies eosinophils and myelocytes in different gates. The eosinopenia in the blood of the COVID19 patients, together with the relatively high number of myelocytes, leads to cross-contamination in the respective gates, as both cell types are CD16low and CD11b bright to various degrees.

This error does not affect the neutrophil data, which are the main subject of the study. The authors have provided corrected figures that combine these two separate gates into one eosinophil/myelocyte gate, and do not allow discrimination of both cell types. Original figures 3E, 6C, and 6D should be ignored, as they are based on the cross-contamination in eosinophil and myelocyte gates in the original Figure 1. The correct figures are shown below.

The authors regret the error.
