Mechanical properties and hairiness characterizations of compact-spinning cotton yarn in warp-knitting processing

Abstract

In this study, the compact-spinning cotton yarns with a liner density of 9.72 tex were knitted by the tricot warp-knitting machine. The mechanical properties and hairiness index of cotton yarns through different parts were tested and the reasons for their variation were analyzed. In addition, they were compared with the same fineness of ring-spinning combed cotton yarns. The results demonstrated that the cotton yarns’ breaking strength decreased continuously after passing through the warp-knitting machine, decreased by 25.4% relative to the original yarns. The hairiness index of cotton yarns rose through the guide rail and tension lever, increased by 42.0% and 74.3% respectively compared with the original yarn. However, the hairiness index decreased by 16.4% when cotton yarns passed through the guide needles relative to the previous process. It is concluded that compact-spinning cotton yarns were more suitable than ring-spinning combed cotton yarns for warp knitting.
