Complex 1 having a unique Ag10Cu6 core stabilized by two in-situ formed PNNP type ligands and twelve phenylacetylides was synthesized and fully characterized. Red phosphorescence emission at 630 nm was selectively and reversibly quenched by ammonia in air or water with detection limits of 53 ppm for NH3 gas and 21 μmol/L (0.36 ppm) for NH3 ⋅ H2O.
