(Fig. 1)William G. (Bill) Ellis was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and grew up in Iowa, primarily in the small town of Mount Pleasant. He graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1953 and from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1957. He did his internship at Cook County in 1957–1958 (where he fell in love with Chicago) and did his neurology residency at the University of Iowa (1958–1961), studying with Adolph Sachs, Maurice Van Allen, and Robert Joynt. As a neurology resident, he published a report on the neurological complications associated with trampolines (1).
