Majority Estimates of Errors in Determining the Origin Time and Ratio of Longitudinal and Shear Wave Velocities from the Wadati Diagram

Abstract

The article gives the upper estimates for errors in determining the time of occurrence of earthquakes (origin time) τ0 and the ratio of the velocities of longitudinal and shear wave g propagating from earthquakes. The study also considers cases when the origin time is considered known and the ratio of longitudinal and shear wave velocities is known. The article draws two main conclusions. The first is that to determine the origin time from the Wadati diagram, it makes sense to fix the slope of the graph. The value of this slope can be determined as the average of the slopes of the set of graphs. If we determine the origin time by plotting the Wadati diagram for each event, determining τ0 and g at the same time, then the errors in determining τ0 and, therefore, in determining the hypocenter can be significant. In the case when the slope of the Wadati diagram is fixed, the accuracy of determining t0 and, therefore, earthquake hypocenters is increased. The second conclusionis that determining the change in the slope of the Wadati diagram over time for a particular seismically active region becomes very problematic, since the errors in determining the slope of the graph are comparable to variations in the slope due to changes in the stress state of the elastic medium in the region.
