Two Co(II)-bearing coordination polymers: crystal structures and treatment activity on periodontitis

Abstract

By using a bifunctional organic ligand 2-(benzimidazol-1-yl)terephthalic acid (H2bitp) featuring both imidazol-carboxylate groups, two new Co(II)-containing coordination polymers (CPs) with the chemical formulae of {[Co(bitp)(bpa)0.5(H2O)2]·0.5bpa}n (1, bpa = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylane) and {[Co1.5(bitp)(Hbitp)(2,2′-bpy)(H2O)]·3H2O}n (2, 2,2′-bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) have been successfully prepared by reaction of Co(NO3)2·6H2O with the H2bitp ligand in the presence of different N-donor co-ligands. Their treatment activity on periodontitis was evaluated and the specific mechanism was then explored. After treated with compounds 1 and 2, the relative expression of the inflammatory genes nf-κb and p53 in periodontal mucosal cells was measured with real time RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction). ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) detection kit was used to detect the release of the inflammatory cytokines in the gingival crevicular fluid after compounds 1 and 2 treatment. Compound 1 showed stronger biological activity than compound 2 on periodontitis treatment.
