Electron Microscopy and Electron Diffraction Studies of Morphology and Crystal Structure of Natural Silicas

Abstract

The development of fundamental and applied geology requires an ever-increasing amount of data on the structures and properties of rocks at different scales. Of particular interest are investigations of properties of rocks and minerals in relation to micron- and submicron-sized inclusions. These issues are in high demand for studies of different forms of natural silicas and micro- and nanocracks in superhard and high-density rocks. Different microstructural analysis methods were used to perform 3D studies of natural nanostructured silicas (siliceous clays). These results can serve as the basis for the solution of both fundamental problems, such as geochronology, genesis, and catagenetic transformations of mineral forms, and a wide range of applied issues, for example, for the description of unconventional oil and gas reservoir rocks.
