Biopolymers are an ideal interface for bioelectronic devices to sense and deliver signals between living systems and electronics. Jia, Rolandi and team review natural biopolymers as proton conductors that are able to convert biological signals into electronic signals and vice-versa using H+ as an intermediary. The mechanisms of proton conduction in polysaccharides, peptides, proteins and melanins, and their applications in sensors and actuators are summarised. They also discuss materials challenges and future directions for natural biopolymers in devices. (DOI: 10.1002/bip.23433)
