The Relationship Between Iron and Nitrogen Concentrations Based On Kjeldahl Method and SPAD-502 Readings in Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. cv. ‘Sultana Seedless’)

The crop nitrogen and iron status play a key role for crop yield and quality in grapevines and other plant species. These elements are generally assessed by petiole tissue or destructive leaf analysis. Non-destructive estimation of nitrogen and iron sufficiency in grapevine leaves would contribute significantly to sensitive crop management. We therefore were recorded two different data against leaf nitrogen and iron content under the greenhouse for the ‘Sultana Seedless’ grape cultivar (values obtained from the SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter and Fe and N contents obtained from an atomic absorption spectrophotometer and micro-Kjeldahl method). Significant regression equations were determined between SPAD values and foliar Fe and N concentrations for Vitis vinifera L. cv. ‘Sultana Seedless’ grape cultivar during three consecutive years. The findings showed that there was a linear and positive correlation between total N and Fe content and SPAD-502 data. The intersection points varied between three years, but the slopes of the regression lines were similar in the results. At all sampling years the correlation of SPAD readings to N and Fe content were significant (r = 0.875* for 2012, r = 927* for 2013 and r = 0.925* for 2014 at Fe content and r = 0.909* for 2012, r = 0.865* for 2013, and r = 0.953* for 2014 at % N content, respectively). Therefore, it can be concluded that SPAD-502 could be used to estimate both iron and nitrogen content in grapevine leaves.
