Too often, the acknowledgment of race in clinical research is confined to a statement in the limitations section. In Ellis et al. (this issue), we see a significant deviation from this pattern. The study described the recruitment of Black adolescents into a clinical trial for diabetes management. Their aims were (1) to determine what outreach efforts are needed to recruit Black adolescents with diabetes and their caregivers, and (2) to determine if the degree of recruitment effort needed was related to demographic, diabetes-related, or family characteristics. The authors utilized the terms “expedited recruitment (ER)” and “prolonged recruitment (PR)” to characterize families. ER and PR families differed significantly in total number of recruitment contacts and the length of time to recruitment. Notably, family income was the only significantly different variable between ER and PR families.
