Impurity-Induced Antiferromagnetism in S = 1/2 Alternating Chain System NaCu2VP2O10

Impurity-induced antiferromagnetism was observed in the S = 1/2 alternating chain compound NaCu2VP2O10 when a few nonmagnetic ions were substituted at the Cu sites. NaCu2VP2O10 showed a nonmagnetic spin-singlet ground state at low temperatures. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat of the Mg-doped compounds, Na(Cu1−xMgx)2VP2O10 \((x = 0.03,0.05)\), showed anomalies at ∼8 K, indicating antiferromagnetic ordering.
