It is a pleasure to write an occasional editor’s introduction for the latest issue of Theory and Research in Education, albeit at a challenging time. Over the last year-and-a-half, our journal’s community has shared in the difficulties associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. From correspondence with readers, authors, editorial board members and reviewers, we are keenly aware of the extent to which our professional and personal lives have been upended by the coronavirus. University campuses around the world have seen closures, and, as I write, some are reopening only partially. Few are back to ‘business as usual’. Colleagues in all parts of the world have seen their teaching activity moved online and have had to make great efforts not only to redesign their teaching, but also to carry out their research and administrative work in new ways. We have also seen cancellations to the planned conferences, seminars and talks at the heart of our scholarly community.
