Abstract—

It is shown that n-fold refining of a host–impurity system at a rate V, separation factor K < 1, and final yield G by simple distillation or conventional directional solidification is more effective in terms of final product purity and throughput than is single-cycle refining at a rate v < V, a separation factor k < K < 1, and the same yield G if ≈ln k/ln K < n < V/v (where V and v are linear directional solidification rates or vaporization rates per unit surface area in the case of distillation).
