Magnetic Properties and Critical Currents of the Superconducting Rhodium Borides YRh4B4 and HoRh3.8Ru0.2B4

Abstract—

We have studied the electrical-transport, thermophysical, and magnetic properties of the YRh4B4 and HoRh3.8Ru0.2B4 compounds. YRh4B4 has been shown to be a classic type II superconductor with Tc ~ 10 K, whereas the superconducting transition of HoRh3.8Ru0.2B4 (at Tc ~ 6 K) occurs along with its ferrimagnetic transition (Tm ~ 22–23 K). We have measured magnetic irreversibility loops for the YRh4B4 and HoRh3.8Ru0.2B4 compounds and calculated Jc(B) in the Bean model. The reduced pinning force Fp/Fp max as a function of hp = B/Bc2 for YRh4B4 has been shown to obey a “scaling” law, whereas the magnetic superconductor HoRh3.8Ru0.2B4 exhibits a significant deviation from the scaling law for hp > 0.2.
