In medicine, we are privileged to listen to stories every day, and with this great privilege also comes witness to much suffering. Our patients share their stories in search of healing and hope. Medical providers, too, can find much-needed healing and hope through storytelling.1 The following 55-word stories, authored by medical students in the Class of 2021 at the USU, reflect on challenging moments during clinical rotations or other patient care experiences.2 They were written in early 2020 during an annual humanities seminar focused on “unpacking” the clerkship year and exploring hidden curriculum themes. Whether the stories emote grief, horror, shame, or seemingly mundane moments of sadness, we are wise to heed the lessons and warnings they convey in small but powerful sets of just 55 words—Lt Col Jennifer G. Chang USAF, MC.
