Abstract The panel discussion “Material Matters in Paintings at the End of an Era” took place at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in 2018 and considered the role of textiles in the painting exhibition curated by Tandazani Dhlakama, Five Bhobh: Painting at the End of an Era. Panelists Anthony Bumhira, Jessica Hemmings and Hayden Proud, chaired by Erica de Greef, discussed the practical necessities of textile—and more broadly craft—materials used in Zimbabwean visual culture today and during the country’s sanctions era; the tradition of crochet doilies made in Zimbabwe for sale in South Africa; differing institutional treatment of craft and art in the region related to the Weya appliqué project; and the role of Gallery Delta in the long term development of Zimbabwean painting. Preserving the format of the dialogue for publication is intended as a modest decolonizing strategy—an effort to give equal weight to the diverse perspectives voiced during the panel discussion. The text is dedicated to Anthony Bumhira who passed away in January of 2020.
