Dependence of Shear Stress on Shear Rate during a Flow of Structured Suspensions

Abstract

A semi-empirical equation is obtained that describes the dependence of shear stress on shear rate during the flow of a one-component suspension. The suspension is considered to consist of two fractions: single grains and their dimers. Equilibrium is established between the two, depending on the shear rate. The equation is based on Krieger’s formula, generalized to multicomponent suspensions. The obtained equation approximates the experimental data and can be used to extrapolate to zero shear rate to determine yield stress.
