Focusing of Ultrasonic Energy in a Given Region of a Biological Object with Allowance for the Interface between Two Media

Abstract

A method of focused delivery of ultrasonic energy to a given point inside a biological object using a circular antenna array is proposed. The functional diagram of a multielement circular array with alternating emitting and receiving elements is presented. The channels of emitting elements contain controlled phase shift modules and all receiving elements are connected to the summator. The possibility of ultrasonic energy focusing is shown by means of modeling of the circular array operation with allowance for the wave propagation in two media. The result of focusing is estimated with allowance for the interface between two media. It is assumed that the two media differ in the propagation speed of the ultrasonic wave. The presence of two media on the propagation path of the ultrasonic wave leads to defocusing and shift of the focus position.
