ABSTRACT

The publication of my book, Anatomy of the ANC in Power: Insights from Port Elizabeth, 1990–2019, attracted a number of scholarly reviews. I used the coastal city of Port Elizabeth as a case study to examine local politics, specifically the interplay between the local ANC and the municipality. The resultant reviews have been both complimentary and critical. They are unanimous that the book is unique and adds immense value in understanding the dynamics that drive local politics. But they differ on what they consider to be the strengths of the book, with some arguing that the book did not provide adequate explanation of why events panned out in the manner they did. This is the rejoinder to the reviews. I do not respond to each point raised, but only to the salient issues that enable a better understanding of the content of the book.
