Study of Ionizing Radiation Effects on Gasoline

Abstract

The application of organic materials, polymers, lubricants, fuels, is expanding under operating conditions when they are exposed to ionizing radiation, under operating conditions of atomic and thermonuclear reactors, electron accelerators, and in outer space. Samples of AI-92 gasoline were used as the object of the study. Laboratory studies were carried out on a 60Co gamma source at a dose rate of P = 0.18 Gy/s at room temperature and absorbed doses in the range of D = 15–150 kGy. The effect of ionizing radiation on the structural-group composition of gasoline under static conditions was examined according to the usual method before and after irradiation. At various absorbed doses its effect was investigated on the density, viscosity, iodine number, and other technical parameters of gasoline at room temperature. The results of such studies allow assessment of the radiation resistance of fuels, the impact of irradiation on the total composition of fuels, and possible changes in their quality.
