More than 60% of the US population have experienced epistaxis (nosebleeds) in their lifetime, of whom 6% will seek medical attention.1 Depending on the severity, nosebleeds can be costly and heavily affect quality of life.1 The range of interventions for epistaxis includes self-treatment and/or home remedies, moderately invasive (sometimes only temporizing) clinician-based interventions, and surgical or endovascular procedures. The American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) created this guideline for nosebleeds that are severe, persistent, and/or recurrent to provide clear, actionable recommendations and reduce variations in the management of epistaxis.
