Identification of minerals and mineral pigments in lacquer by the comprehensive comparative analysis of spectroscopy information

Abstract

This article presents the results of a systematic investigation on the identification of minerals used in lacquers. Micro-Raman combined with Infrared spectroscopy can serve as a highly specific and complementary micro-destructive technique for successfully identifying the molecular structure of the minerals. Both 532-nm and 785-nm laser radiations were used to compare the spectral information and to clarify which wavelength was suited to balance the signal to noise ratio. The spectra of fourteen minerals were analyzed and compared in detail, which can provide support for the research on the developmental changes of lacquer materials in different historical periods by establishing an identification method.
